Agent West

$

This comic strip was inspired by Kanye West's album sleeve (and video) for his 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'...

Kanye's original, abandoned, album title was 'Good Ass Job'.
Pop star M.I.A also makes a guest appearance - last year she was famously interviewed/stitched up by a journalist who offered her free truffles, then wrote that she couldn't be much of a revolutionary if she was into fancy restaurants and truffles.
'Agent West' is a sequel to 'Talk To The Mouth', my first Kanye comic (find it by clicking on the Kanye West label).

Here's the B&W version, which I like visually just as much as the colour one. Colour seems to make it funnier though;

...and here's the original rough, where I work out most of the dialogue, basic expressions on everyone's faces, 'camera' angles etc. and then juggle the panels around until they fit onto the 2 pages.
This is scrawled onto 2 sides of A4;

Is it just me, or does Kanye look a lot like Tony Blair in the face-change panel, in the centre of page 2?

I wrote the story for this one last year, after seeing this little article in the May '10 Stool Pigeon..

From the June issue of The Stool Pigeon, out now. Probably makes no sense at all if you don't know about The Velvet Underground.
Here's the rough version, scrawled in pencil and delicately shaded in coffee;

...and here's a drawing/painting of Lady Gaga I did for the same issue;

Thanks to Phil and Mickey at The Stool Pigeon for letting me loose on the cover - the only proviso was that I couldn't do a big picture of James Brown's anus.
This story is a kind of sequel to the 'Channel Zero' one I did a while back, also with Sunn O))).

Doctor Cave (No.4)

This thoughtful theological meditation is from the October issue of The Stool Pigeon, out now.
I wrote the script for this one about 3 years ago (it was going to be the first Dr. Cave strip), and it's been in my 'to do' pile ever since. Mr. Leech was the new addition that made me finally get round to drawing it.
The art was inspired by Ken Reid's 50's & 60's work for The Beano and Dandy, and 60's animation, like Top Cat.

Here's some bonus Dr. Caves - I meant to use them on either side of the Doctor Cave logo, but I didn't finish them before the publishing deadline. Maybe I'll use them in his next thrilling adventure, or perhaps I'll do a couple more variations, repeat it as a pattern, and then sell it as children's wallpaper. Such a treat for the darling little ones!

 This David Lynch pic is also from the same Stool Pigeon...

 I'd advise you to read the first Danger Squad story before reading this one (find it in the 'labels' section, up on the right)...it'll make more sense that way. Well, a little bit more, anyway...

  I experimented with a different inking style on this one, influenced by old B&W films and the incredible work of woodcut artist Lynd Ward.

                From the woodcut novel 'Wild Pilgrimage' (1932) by Lynd Ward.

This and the Morrissey one are from the March 2012 edition of The Stool Pigeon music magazine, available for free wherever hipsters congregate.
I thought I'd do something bright, silly and colourful after my last comic, the 3 page B&W epic of confusing horror 'Cash'. Fans of confusing horror will be happy to know that part 2 of Cash, 'Grits' is all written - I'll probably stick it in a book, when I compile all this shit.
I'm particularly happy with the Oompah Loompahs in panel 4 of Morrissey & Clyde, and it was a fun* challenge to try and emulate a 60's animation drawing style.

Here's some alternate ideas for the little badges I used either side of the Reluctant Turd title...

I think some of these would look great on t-shirts...who's up for nipping to Tesco's wearing an 'Ages 7+' t-shirt? Arf.

* not fun.

Doctor Cave in 'Bad Wood'

The 5th Doctor Cave adventure, and maybe my first comic strip where nobody dies.
This story was partially inspired by the first time I took acid and got lost in some wood grain, right before the slugs attacked. Good times.
I didn't have much time to do this one, so I tried out a looser and scratchier inking style than usual, and the initial pencil drawings were pretty rough. Kind of suits the story I think, like an English 50's style comic crossed with an Ealing movie.
